Notes & Quotes: Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama

Mike Conway on Barber Motorsports Park: “Barber is pretty different compared to most tracks we go to: it’s very smooth and has some faster corners. It requires a little bit of a different setup but the test we had there at the beginning of the year went okay so we’ve just got to keep improving from what we found with this new car. Racing wise, it does get a bit static sometimes, you have to rely a lot on the restarts to make things happen because it’s not easy to pass there.”

Conway on the race: “I don’t think you’ll see much side-by-side racing happening at Barber, it’s pretty tight, and quite hard to pass so it may be a bit of a processional race to be honest. It’s going to make qualifying more important, you’ve got to be up at the front and see how the race plays out.”

A.J. Foyt on 2013 Houston Grand Prix: “I’m glad to see the race come back to my hometown—I can save on hotel bills! I’m really glad to see they’re talking about making changes to the race track because I don’t think the other layout was good for the spectators or the racers—there was no place to pass. So I hope the changes they make do give the drivers some places to pass. It should be a great event for Houston.”

Past performance in Alabama: Mike Conway’s best start is second and his best finish is 9th (same race-2010) The ABC Supply team’s best start is 19th and their best finish is 12th (Vitor Meira, 2011).

Conway’s parents Mike and Kim, who live in Kent, England are spending the week with their son and getting a tour of the Scottsdale, Ariz. area which is where he recently moved. Mike says, “I’ve been showing them around. I’ve had them out hiking. [You had your parents hiking?] Well they like walking--they’re always out walking with the dogs. My dad has some sort of a hiking challenge next month where he walks the three highest peaks in the U.K.  He’s getting geared up for that so he’s walking a lot here. The last two days have really flown by, between squeezing in training and showing them around. I wish we had more time but they got to see a fair amount I think.”
