HOUSTON -- A.J. Foyt and wife Lucy traveled to Washington, D.C. early
last Wednesday morning (Mar. 20th) on their private jet where they
joined son Larry Foyt for a press conference to announce Harrah's as
the prime sponsor of the Meals on Wheels program for the next three
years.
The Foyts joined executives from Harrah's Entertainment, including
President and Chief Operating Officer Gary Loveman, and Meals On
Wheels executives as well as several Senators and congressmen to
announce the program.
Senator John Breaux (D-LA) and Senator John Ensign (R-NV) spoke about
the need to increase funding for the Meals on Wheels programs which
provide meals to seniors who otherwise might go hungry. The program
also provides companionship for house-bound seniors. Meals On Wheels
is celebrating its 30th year .
Both A.J. and Larry Foyt spoke to the media assembled in the Ronald
Reagan Building. This month, A.J.'s Indy Racing League team and
Larry's NASCAR Busch team have pledged to donate meals for laps run
and laps lead and 10,000 meals for every race won. There will be other
programs unveiled as the year goes on.
"I am proud that the Foyt/Harrah's race teams will be a part of the
Meals on Wheels program," Foyt said, who, at 67, is a senior himself.
"I look forward to helping them out. I can always make some time if
they need me to deliver a few meals."
Larry, who drives the Harrah's Monte Carlo in the NASCAR Busch Series
has already delivered some meals in his race car earlier this month in
Las Vegas.

"It meant a lot to me to actually go out and meet some of the seniors
who benefit from this program," young Foyt said. "In Las Vegas I met
some seniors who were race fans who watched my dad race and we talked
quite a bit about that. Driving up in the race car sure got everyone's
attention and it was a lot of fun. We have gotten a lot from racing
and it is good to be able to give something back through our race
program."
Following the press conference, the Foyts and Harrah's executives went
by limo to the Capitol for lunch in the U.S. Senate dining room as
guests of Senator Harry Reid (D-NV). Also joining the Foyts and
Loveman at the table was Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL). Senator Max
Cleland (D-GA) stopped by to say hello; Sen. Cleland is a big race fan
who has been to races at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
After the luncheon, Larry Foyt headed back to North Carolina where his
race team was preparing to leave for Bristol, Tenn. A.J. and Lucy
headed home to Houston. A.J. left the next day for Los Angeles where
his Indy car team was preparing for the Yamaha Indy 400.
