A.J. FOYT TO BE FEATURED ON WHEATIES BOX

A.J. on the Wheaties BoxINDIANAPOLIS (May 24, 2002) – A special-edition package of Wheaties breakfast cereal featuring four-time Indianapolis 500 winner A.J. Foyt was unveiled May 24 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Besides his four victories at Indianapolis, Foyt is the only seven-time Indy-style national champion and the only driver in history to win the Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500 and Le Mans 24 Hours. Foyt retired in 1993 as the all-time leader in Indy-style victories, with 67.

"Every race car driver dreams about winning the big race," Foyt said. "I was fortunate enough to win my share of big races, including the Indy 500 four times. Now to be back in Indy to unveil this Wheaties box is very special. Wheaties is the Breakfast of Champions, and I am honored to be counted among those champions."

The soon-to-be-released 18-ounce package will be available throughout Indiana, Michigan and the southeast United States starting in June. For Foyt fans outside the distribution area, a limited number of packages can be purchased for a limited time by calling (952) 814-2900.

Foyt, now an owner of a two-car Indy Racing League team, continues the long tradition of motorsports stars being featured on Wheaties boxes. Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Wilbur Shaw was the first driver on a Wheaties box, in 1936.

"A.J. Foyt's incredible career makes him one of the greatest drivers of all time," said Brian Kittelson, Wheaties marketing manager. "We are thrilled to welcome him into the Wheaties family."

Carb Day
by A.J. Foyt
Thursday was Carburetion Day at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The two-hour session is the final practice before the Indy 500 which takes place on Sunday. And this year's Carb Day was one of the smoothest that I can remember in the past 45 Mays I've been here.

My Harrah's Indy cars ran in the top-12 of the 33 race starters who were on the track. Greg Ray was third quickest in the No. 11 car while Airton Dare was 12th quick in the No. 14 car. Both drivers were happy with the way their cars performed.

In final practice, the cars run with full loads of fuel and the race set-up which has more downforce in the car than you have for qualifying. Downforce allows the car to stick to the track better but if you have too much of it, the drag that is also created will slow you down big-time on the straightaways. The trick is to put enough downforce in the car so it can stick when the track gets slick, but not so much that you feel like you have a boat anchor tied to the back of your car.

Based on what Greg and Airton said, I think we have just the right balance in the cars.

People have been asking me how I think Sunday's race will play out and to be honest, I really don't know. We're starting deep in the field, (at 30th and 31st, it is actually the worst my teams have ever started in the 500), so we'll have to take advantage of every opportunity to improve our track position. On top of that, our pitstops will have to be flawless.

But my guys are prepared, we have had a relatively smooth month with no crashes so we haven't had to repair cars. I think we have a really good shot. If we do win, it will be the first time that anyone has ever won from either of those starting positions.

My whole career has been like that though, being the first to do this or that. I see no reason to stop now.
