Rookie Woes in Atlanta
With nearly half the NASCAR Busch Series field comprised of
full-time Nextel Cup drivers, it's a difficult time for a
rookie to be learning the ropes in the Busch Series these
days. All of the Busch races run so far this season have
been won by Cup drivers including Saturday's winner Jeff
Burton.
A. J. Foyt IV is one of the young rookies flying without the
safety net of an affiliation with a Nextel Cup team. He and
the Great Clips team struggled to find the right set-up for
the No. 38 car during the entire weekend in Atlanta. It was
Foyt IV's first time around the fast, 1.5 mile track.
Saturday afternoon, he started 37th and finished 33rd in the
Nicorette 300 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
"It was a long day. We've been kind of lost the whole time
since we unloaded the truck set-up wise," said Foyt IV on
the reality show NBS 24/7 which aired Monday evening. "Being
it was my first time here, I was a little bit lost out there
also, so it's just kind of a bad combination."
Starting with the upcoming race in Bristol, Tenn., the
points system, which guarantees the Top 30 owners a starting
berth in the race, begins to work off of this year's
standings (as opposed to last year's standings in which the
Great Clips team was 23rd).
Foyt's problems in the early season resulted in his team,
Akins Motorsports, dropping out of the top 30. This coming
weekend, Foyt IV will have to make the field on speed around
the high intensity, high-banked half-mile track in Bristol,
Tenn.
The Sharpie Mini 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway will be
televised on FOX on Saturday, March 25th starting at 3pm.
