A.J. Foyt IV's First Trip to Bristol Memorable
Last week A.J. Foyt IV had his work cut out for him to qualify for
the Mini Sharpie 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway, a track he had never
seen before, much less raced or tested on. To sharpen the challenge,
rain washed out the first day of practice.
A Saturday morning practice session saw Foyt IV running competitive
times around the steeply-banked half-mile oval. However, snow forced
cancellation of qualifying so the field was set according to owner's
points and Foyt IV started 36th in the 300 lapper. An early pitstop
for adjustments turned into a two-tire stop and Foyt IV had to
restart in 39th. Snow postponed the race which finally got underway
an hour and a half later.
Foyt IV was advancing through the field by staying out of trouble
and capitalizing on others' mistakes when his exhaust pipes fell off
his car about a third of the way into the race. He went to the
garage for repairs and 42 laps later he rejoined the race. He
finished 35th.
Once again NASCAR Nextel Cup regulars took the top five positions:
Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Matt Kenseth, Denny Hamlin and Carl
Edwards.
Foyt IV's next race is the O'Reilly 300 at his hometown track Texas
Motor Speedway. The Great Clips team is building a brand new No. 38
Dodge for the event. The race will be broadcast live by FOX-TV
Saturday, April 8th at 3 pm. |
