It's Not The Years, It's The Miles... In
just his second year of Busch Series competition, Larry Foyt
has made a habit of taking the information learned on his
first run on any track and applying those lessons to his
return – and Dover is no exception. During his rookie
campaign, Foyt qualified 27th in his first shot at the Monster
Mile, but got caught in an early-race accident and finished
41st. When he returned in September, Foyt qualified 23rd and
held his ground to finish there as well.
TGIF??... During his rookie season, cement tracks were
not friendly to Larry Foyt on qualifying day. In 2001, Foyt
started the five Busch series events in Bristol, Dover and
Nashville in 33rd, 27th, 31st, 23rd and 14th position. With a
year under his belt, Foyt has continued the qualifying rally
in 2002, kicking off the cement shoes to qualify 19th at
Bristol and a career-best 5th at Nashville – where Foyt will
return next week.
Back To The Basics... Larry Foyt might not know what to
do with his time off the track in Dover, following a hectic
Memorial Day weekend. In Charlotte, Foyt ran a new paint
scheme for the movie "Behind Enemy Lines," and hosted actor
David Keith and a pair of sweepstakes winners from Alaska
during the Saturday race. Following the Busch race, Foyt made
the hop to Indy to continue an attendance streak at the Indy
500 that dates back to 1977, then returned to Charlotte on
Sunday night to sit atop the box in support of his Winston Cup
teammate Stacy Compton during the Coca-Cola 600.
Larry Foyt... "Our finish (23rd) last season may not have
really shown it, but we were a lot better the second time we
came back to Dover. The car was better, my communication with
Jon (Wolfe) was better, and my level of comfort with the track
was much higher. Dover is just a big short track where
experience really pays off. The first time I came here last
season, I watched the veterans drive the track and was amazed
at how deep they'll drive into the corner and still carry all
that speed out of the turn. That's the key here, you've got to
have a car that handles well; but, as a driver, you've got to
be aggressive and drive it into the corner deep and have faith
that it will stick – because it will. I'm really anxious to go
back there this season because this Harrah's Team is so much
better in its second year, and we get the chance to apply all
that we've learned."
