Notes & Quotes:
Larry Foyt on Memphis: "It's a typical short track where you
need to get the car to rotate through the center of the corner so
you can carry as much speed as possible off the corner. Last year
qualifying rained out and we started 25th. In fact the race was
postponed until Sunday because of the rain. I got as high as 16th
but then I spun out trying too hard. So I went back to 24th and
finally got it back up to 17th. I'm hoping for a much better showing
this weekend."
Foyt tested at Caraway Speedway, a 3/8 mile track in Asheboro, N.C.
this week. "The test was useful because we tried different brake
pads and rotors and found out which combination Larry preferred,"
said acting crew chief Lance Ferno. "We also tried some other things
that will make the car turn better in the middle of the corner.
Larry is pretty excited about going to Memphis."
Double duty: Lance Ferno has taken over the crew chief duties
on Foyt's car since Kansas and has been working well with the
sophomore driver. However, Ferno still changes the front tire on A.J.
Foyt's Conseco car so he will be making the trek from Memphis to
Martinsville, Va. Saturday night to change tires on Sunday for Mike
Wallace in the No. 14 Pontiac. Chris Davala, who is the rear tire
carrier for both cars, will also be making the trip with Ferno. Of
the remaining race weekends, this weekend is the only one where the
two series are in different locations.
More Meals on Wheels: Foyt will once again be thrilling the
seniors with his Meals on Wheels delivery in the No. 14 Harrah's
Chevrolet, this time near the Harrah's Casino in Memphis, Tenn.
Foyt is 19th in the NASCAR Busch Series standings; he has earned
$501,775 which is the first time in his career that he has topped
the half-million dollar mark. How times have changed...his father A.J.
earned $663,554 in a NASCAR "Grand National" (now Winston Cup)
career of 127 starts that spanned four decades. He claimed 7
victories including the 1972 Daytona 500.
Last Race: Foyt qualified 9th at Lowe's Motor Speedway but a
problem on the first pitstop dropped him from 14th to 22nd. After a
second stop that went smoothly, he got caught up in a multi-car
wreck on a restart and sustained damage to the right front. The
Harrah's crew made repairs without losing a lap and Foyt finished
17th.
Best 2002 Start: 5th at Nashville (Apr. 13) and Kentucky
