RADIOSHACK AND A.J. FOYT
FAMILY WANT RACING FANS TO START THEIR ENGINES AND GO TO THE "XTREME"
Most Xtreme race fan wins same-day trip to "Racing's Daily Double" –
the Indianapolis 500 in Indiana and Coca-Cola 600 in North Carolina Daytona, Fla. – February 11, 2003 – RadioShack Corporation (NYSE:
RSH) and the A.J. Foyt family today announced at Daytona International
Speedway the nationwide search for the most revved-up, enthusiastic race
fan that has taken their love of the sport to a new Xtreme. The
RadioShack 2003 Xtreme Race Fan contest, which begins today, is offering
a high-velocity prize package tailored exclusively for the most devoted
auto racing fan.
From March 1st, 2003 until April 30th, entrants are invited to submit a
short essay (500 words or less), with an optional photograph or a
75-second or less VHS video tape that documents why they, or someone
they know, deserve the title, "Xtreme Race Fan." As an example, last
year's prize winner for RadioShack's Xtreme Baseball Fan contest built a
replica of Fenway Park in his back yard.
The Xtreme Race Fan grand prize winner will receive a whirlwind prize
package to see "Racing's Daily Double" and witness two of the most
celebrated events in racing on the very same day. On May 25, the winner
and three family members or friends will first be flown to see the
Indianapolis 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana starting
at 11 a.m. (EST) and then be whisked off by private jet to watch the
Coca-Cola 600 at the Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., which
starts at 6 p.m.
"It's not just the speed that gets race car drivers charged up; it's the
devotion of our loyal fans," commented legendary motorsports icon A.J.
Foyt, owner of A.J. Foyt Racing Enterprises. "Our racing family is
excited to
be teaming with RadioShack to seek out those fans who have made the
sport of racing the family-friendly, yet passion-inspiring spectacle it
has become today."
In launching the inaugural Xtreme Race Fan Contest, RadioShack is making
a nationwide call for stories, descriptions, pictures and video accounts
from fans of all types of motorsports – everything from NASCAR to dirt
track racing – who demonstrate a unique dedication, loyalty and extreme
enthusiasm for their favorite race car driver or team. Entrants can
nominate themselves, a friend or a family member whom they deem worthy.
"Because of our involvement as the title sponsor of the Samsung/RadioShack
500 NASCAR Winston Cup race at the Texas Motor Speedway, we are
distinctly aware of how passionate race fans can be," said Jim McDonald,
senior vice president of advertising and marketing for RadioShack.
"That's why we decided to look for the people and families responsible
for putting the racing world into high gear. It could be fans who have
traveled the country following their favorite driver; parents who have
passed their love of racing down to their children; maybe someone who
has never missed a single Daytona 500 or Indy 500 race. This contest is
about finding people who are passionate about motorsports in a way that
others might find outrageous."
In the history of racing, the A.J. Foyt family can be considered the
embodiment of an "Xtreme Race Family," with legendary four-time winner
of the Indianapolis 500 and Driver of the Century A.J.; his son Larry, a
rookie NASCAR Winston Cup series driver; and grandson A.J. (Anthony) IV,
winner of the Infiniti Pro Series Championship and an Indy Racing League
rookie. They will be helping promote the Xtreme fan contest through
advertising and promotional appearances through the end of April.
The Xtreme Race Fan Contest is RadioShack's latest initiative in what is
becoming a tradition of recognizing fans that stand apart from the pack
to embody the spirit of their favorite sport. Last year, RadioShack
inaugurated its 2002 Xtreme Baseball Fan Contest and recognized George
O'Donnell as baseball's wildest and craziest fan. O'Donnell, a die hard
Boston Red Sox fan, had actually created a scaled down version of Fenway
Park, including a replica of the infamous "Green Monster" in his own
backyard in his native Oregon.
Entry forms with contest details can be picked up at any of the more
than 7,200 RadioShack stores nationwide or by visiting
www.RadioShack.com. All entrants should mail their submission to
"RadioShack Xtreme Racing Fan," 445 E. Illinois, Suite 351, Chicago, IL
60611, and be postmarked by April 30, 2003. |
