Larry Foyt Released from Hospital
Larry Foyt was released from Methodist Hospital Monday afternoon
and is expected to fly home to Charlotte Tuesday. Foyt was taken
to the hospital Sunday following his crash in the Indianapolis
500 on lap 15. Foyt's No. 41 ABC Supply/Dallara/Toyota spun
entering turn one spinning backwards into the SAFER Barrier.
Foyt sustained a compressed vertebra and a chipped disk in his
lower spine. He was fitted with a back brace on Monday and
released. He is expected to make a full recovery which could
take up to six weeks.
The Foyt Boys Qualify for Indy 500
INDIANAPOLIS
May 20--A.J. Foyt IV and Larry Foyt both qualified their ABC Supply
Co.-sponsored cars for the 89th Running of the Indianapolis 500
Saturday afternoon. They will start from the tenth row in 28th and
30th respectively.
While Larry Foyt qualified early in the No. 41 ABC Supply/Dallara
with a four-lap average of 219.396 mph, A.J. IV's attempts to get in
the 33-car field were more dramatic.
Foyt IV was about to take the green flag to start his qualifying run
early Saturday afternoon when his engine blew on the backstretch of
the 2.5-mile historic Speedway. He coasted into the pits. The crew
took the No.14 car back to the garage where they began dismantling
the engine.
With
no more qualifying motors available from TRD, the team borrowed a
used Toyota engine from the Ganassi team which was then installed in
the 14 car. Foyt IV returned to the track later in the day to run
the engine and check on their set-up.
Foyt IV took to the track at 5:30 p.m for his qualifying run and
proceeded to click off four laps which varied by only
three-hundredths of a second or less than two-tenths of a mile an
hour.
"We ran a little bit faster earlier, but those are the four most
consistent laps we've had all month," said A.J. IV in his
post-qualifying interview. "I'm just glad to get the ABC (Supply
Co.) car in there. We tried to qualify earlier and had an engine go.
That was disappointing because it was our qualifying engine. We had
to get another engine from another team, so it may not have been up
to where our other one was. But we got the car into the field and
now can look forward to the race, that's what matters."
Larry Foyt posted four solid laps in the 219 range; he too varied by
only a half mile an hour during his four-lap run.
"It's a little frustrating," said Larry afterwards. "I thought we
had a 220 mph in it, but for some reason, we just didn't have it
today. We trimmed the car out this morning, and it should have gone
faster. But it just didn't pick up. Our run was pretty consistent,
though. We started to pick up a little bit of a push the last couple
of laps in Turn 2 probably because of the wind. (Turn) 2 seems to be
the toughest corner out there. Now we're done with qualifying, we
can focus on getting prepared for the race."
It will mark the 28-year-old's second Indy car start and second Indy
500.
"I love racing these cars," said Foyt's youngest son. "The
competition is great. Dad was able to get sponsorship in ABC Supply
Company for A.J. (Foyt) IV. Hopefully some doors (sponsorship) open
up for me, and we can continue to race these cars."
The Indianapolis 500 will be televised live by ABC-TV on Sunday, May
29th at 1 p.m. eastern time. The one-hour pre-race show begins at
noon eastern on ABC-TV.
