Notes & Quotes:
NASCAR Busch Series Mr. Goodcents 300
On Kansas: "I haven't seen Kansas Speedway but I'm
excited about going there. We've done pretty well on the new
tracks this season. Actually they're all new to me, but it helps
level the playing field when they're new to my competitors as
well. I think the 1.5-mile tracks suit my driving style and my
Harrah's crew has given me good race cars on that type track, so
I think we'll have a good weekend. We're certainly ready for
one."
On Dover: "It was great to get back into a race car. I
missed out on the Richmond race [due to an injury sustained at
Darlington Raceway the week before], so I was probably a little
more excited to be back than most. We had a tight car all day
but I was able to run the whole day, which was good. My first
time at Dover in June, I didn't get much track time. Qualifying
and final practice were rained out and then I got wrecked on the
10th lap so I was just glad to finish this weekend. My fleet [of
race cars] is dwindling on me so I needed to finish...I enjoyed
the track because once the grooves open up, there's room to
race. It's really a lot of fun."
On the patriotism at Dover: "The feeling at Dover was
awesome. I think race fans are very patriotic to begin with but
to see all those flags waving, it was pretty neat. If I had to
compare it to something, I would say it was like going to
Rockingham after Daytona this year. The whole weekend just felt
different. We get so caught up in racing, especially with the
demands on our time, but this weekend I think everyone realized
that there's a much bigger picture out there."
This weekend, Foyt will be busy off the track as well. He
will be signing autographs at the Harrah's Casino in North
Kansas City Thursday night. His famous father A.J. will also
drop in to draw the name of a lucky player who will drive away
in a Harrah's 500 pace car. Following his race on Saturday,
Larry flies to Illinois where he will sign autographs at the
Harrah's property in Metropolis on Sunday. There, Larry will
also draw the name of one lucky player and give him the keys to
another Harrah's 500 pace car. Harrah's Indy car drivers Eliseo
Salazar and Donnie Beechler will be signing autographs tomorrow
evening at the Harrah's in Metropolis to kick off the week-long
festivities celebrating the grand opening of the gaming facility
which is about 80 miles north of Nashville.
A.J. Foyt will also be busy this weekend. He will be in
Kansas on Thursday overseeing his Winston Cup team practice as
well as son Larry in the Harrah's Chevy. The senior Foyt then
flies to Indianapolis Friday where his grandson A.J. IV will be
attempting to qualify the No. 14 Conseco/Craftsman/Harrah's
Beast/Gaerte dirt car for A.J. Foyt's Hulman-Hoosier 100 USAC
Silver Bullet race at the state fairgrounds. The race was rained
out in May and rescheduled for the Formula One Indy weekend.
After the race Friday night, Foyt returns to Kansas to watch his
son Larry race the Harrah's Chevy on Saturday and Ron Hornaday
drive the Conseco Pontiac on Sunday.
Points
standing: Foyt is 23th in the points; he has earned $337,042
to date.
