SPARTA, Ky (June 16) -- Larry Foyt posted
his best start and finish since April in his No. 14 Harrah's
Chevrolet Saturday but that was little consolation to the
24-year-old rookie.
Foyt started 22nd and finished 19th in the Outback 300 at
Kentucky Speedway.
"I am just frustrated because we had such a good
car," said Foyt afterwards. "Jon [Wolfe, crew chief]
and the guys really got the car working good but we had a
problem in the motor. It just wouldn't run on the low end
which really hurt us coming off the corners. This series is so
equal that you can't afford to give up anything and we were
hurting a little on horsepower."
For his part, Foyt did a terrific job avoiding accidents that
seemed to materialize right in front of him.
"The one where I tagged Kerry Earnhardt, well I thought
it was going to be a lot bigger than it was. I was just
lucky," said Foyt.
Foyt's father A.J. was in Pike's Peak, Colo. watching the
night race from his Indy car transporter and was amazed that
his son was able to zig and zag through the multi-car crash.
"He did a great job missing cars, especially on that last
one. Whew,,,," said A.J. who keeps tabs via television
when schedules conflict with his Harrah's Indy car team.
Jay Sauter won the pole while Kevin Harvick won the race.
The next NASCAR Busch series event is at the Milwaukee Mile
Sunday July . It will be broadcast by FX Sports starting at
1:30 pm eastern.
On Kentucky Speedway: "We tested at Kentucky Speedway last week. It is a real nice facility. I was impressed with how wide it is. I think the fans will see some good two-abreast racing there. I was also surprised at how bumpy the track was. We made some adjustments to our shocks and that helped a lot. Mark Green also tested with us to help out with set-ups and that was a big help too. I feel we have one of the best cars I've had all year. It's the same car that we ran at Las Vegas." [In Vegas, Foyt qualified 19th but had to start in the rear due to an engine change. He was running 18th when he got nudged high into the wall. He finished 31st.]
On A.J. Being Just "Dad": "I have a lot of memories of A.J. like that, but I think one of my favorites is when he came to my college graduation and I saw how proud and happy he was that I reached that goal. He hates crowds but he sat through the whole thing." And what is Larry giving his dad for Father's Day? "That's a struggle every year because he has everything he needs, but a win at Kentucky would be nice."
On Dover Downs Speedway: "All I saw was smoke up ahead of me," said Foyt, who was knocked out of contention on lap 11 of the 200-lapper. "I had put my hand up to indicate I was slowing down and I got hit from behind. It's a shame. Fedewa hit the wall coming off turn four and everyone checked up. The 36 car spun and then the 37 car hit him. I was slowing down to follow (Kevin) Lepage through, but then I got hit by Steve Park, which sent me spinning into the wall. It damaged the front and rear clips. It's a tough deal - we just can't get any breaks lately."
In the MBNA Platinum 200, Foyt started 27th and finished 41st.
Points
standing: Foyt is 25th in the points; he has earned $185,047 to date.
