On Charlotte: "I like going back to Charlotte
because it's the track I have the most experience on. We're taking
the same car that we had at Kansas and the guys are working hard to
get it back in shape. We just discovered this car at Michigan where
we qualified fifth and then qualified eighth at Kansas. We had been
told it wasn't that good a car but we found out
differently...Charlotte's going to be tough because everyone who has a
Busch car seems to enter that race."
Team MVP Award: "I started a new incentive program for my
Harrah's team which is the Most Valuable Player award. All the major
sports teams have MVP awards for their games so I started one for my
team. Everyone votes their choice for most valuable player on race
weekend and gives a reason why. The MVP gets an extra $50. Besides
providing everyone an incentive to perform, it provides an
opportunity for feedback through the written comments. Our crew
chief Jon Wolfe won the inaugural MVP award. This team works hard
and puts in some really long hours. I wanted to reward them in a
tangible way and let them know that their efforts are appreciated."
Of the 14 team members, 13 travel on the weekend. Dan Ralph, who
manages the shop while everyone is gone, is the only one not
eligible for the award.
On Kansas: "When we unloaded we were 29th but we kept
improving the car. We felt like we had a really good qualifying
package and I was able to cut a good lap so we wound up eighth. In
the race, I got hung out on the start and then when I did get in,
Matt Kenseth used the apron (which they said you couldn't do in the
driver's meeting) to get under me and I got freight-trained again. I
take some blame because I was too impatient. I drove the car too
hard and got it out of shape, which allowed guys to get under me. We
also figured that we went the wrong way on the gearing, I needed
more power coming off the corner whereas I had it going in...When
Randy Tolsma spun, everyone checked up so I braked. I went up to the
second lane to avoid hitting cars but then I couldn't bring it back
down because there was no grip up there. I got caught up in the
wreck. But the guys did a great job changing the radiator, and when
we got back out we were running lap times in the top 12. So we still
had a pretty good car." Foyt placed 30th.
Official NYPD hats from the New York Police Department will be worn
by Foyt's team during the race. Harrah's donated $1 million to the
families of the police and firefighters who were victims of the
September 11 attack.
Points
standing: Foyt is 23rd in the points; he has earned $355,437 to
date.
