On Watkins Glen: This weekend's event will be Foyt's first stock car race on a road course. Foyt tested the Harrah's Chevy at the 2.45-mile track in western New York state last month. "The goal for this weekend is to stay on the race track," said Foyt, laughing, "because if we do, we'll be okay. I went off about three times when we tested there, and every time it was when I was downshifting for a turn. I still have to work on that."
On the Milwaukee Mile: Foyt had hoped that his previous experience at Milwaukee in the ASA Series last year (when he finished sixth) would prove helpful. "Actually, there wasn't much I could apply from last year," said Foyt. "The Busch car is so different from the ASA car. We fought to get the car to turn in the whole weekend, it was tight, tight, tight. We were hoping for more yellows in the race so we could continue to adjust on the Harrah's Chevy but it was pretty much green flag the second half. I still think it was a big improvement from our last flat track race in Loudon. We gained some but we still have more to go." Foyt started 33rd and finished 23rd; he also moved up one position in the driver's point standings.
Foyt suffered with the flu in Milwaukee, which then worsened into a sinus and ear infection. In fact, a planned test at Indianapolis Raceway Park this week had to be cancelled, but the team is hoping to reschedule. Foyt remained in Indy to recover and will fly directly to Watkins Glen, N.Y., preferring to minimize his time in an airplane.
Points standing: Foyt is 24th in the points; he has earned $215,627 to date.
