INDIANAPOLIS May 12 – Under sunny skies, Conor Daly qualified 15th and Carlos Munoz 18th for the IndyCar Grand Prix on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s road course on Friday afternoon.
Both were disappointed in their runs since in the practice runs both cars were in the top 10—Munoz was ninth in practice 1 and Daly was 10th in practice 2."The good thing is that the car is quite good,” said Daly who lapped the course in 1 minute, 9.0557 seconds (127.150mph).
“We are currently working with Chevrolet to diagnose what caused an issue that affected pit road speed. As a result, we didn’t get to run any laps before we got on the reds [tires]. The wind changed a little bit in turn 1, I made a small mistake there but we really should have made it in. The car was good enough to do it, so once Chevy and our team get to the root of what happened, it will get corrected and we will be good for tomorrow's race."
Munoz’s best qualifying lap of 1 minute, 8.9937 seconds (127.264mph), was quicker than Daly’s but relative to his group which went out second (and the track was faster overall), Munoz was ninth quickest of the 11 drivers in his group.
“I was really disappointed with qualifying because I think we started really good today,” Munoz said. “Then during qualifying, we just didn't get the lap right or the car right. I don’t know what really happened. We have a long race tomorrow, anything can happen but I know we have to work hard.”
Will Power won the pole –his third of the season--with a time of 1 minute, 7.7044 seconds (129.687mph). Completing the Firestone Fast 6 were: Helio Castroneves, Josef Newgarden, Scott Dixon, Juan Pablo Montoya, and Sebastien Bourdais. The race will be broadcast live Saturday afternoon on ABC-TV starting at 3:30 p.m.
