Race Report: Snap On Milwaukee Mile Doubleheader

WEST ALLIS, Wis. (August 30, 2026) -- It was a long Sunday at the historic Milwaukee Mile as the NTT INDYCAR SERIES completed two 250-lap races in one day after rain halted Saturday's opening race after 90mlaps.

For AJ Foyt Racing, Santino Ferrucci turned in the team's best result of the weekend with a strong charge from 22nd to 12th in the No. 14 Homes For Our Troops Chevrolet in Sunday's second race, the Snap-on Milwaukee Mile 250.

Starting deep in the 25-car field, Ferrucci steadily worked his way forward as the race unfolded. With different pit strategies playing out throughout the field, Ferrucci stayed out late in the final sequence and cycled to the lead before making his final stop on lap 196. He returned to the track and continued fighting through traffic, ultimately finishing 12th, gaining 10 positions from where he started.

“Our long run pace is really good," Ferrucci said afterwards. "We just need to find something in the car for the first 15 to 20 laps of the stint to make it a bit better, and I think we'll be good to go for the next race.”

Rookie Caio Collet started 21st in the No. 4 Combitrans Amazonia Chevrolet. It proved to be a difficult race for the young Brazilian as he lost laps to the leaders early and was unable to recover the track position. He finished 23rd after completing 246 of the 250 laps.

Pato O'Ward won the race over pole winner Scott McLaughlin. Rounding out the top five were Christian Lundgaard, David Malukas and Alex Palou.

A few hours later, the teams went back to work to finish the Snap-on Makers and Fixers 250, which had been stopped by rain Saturday before reaching the halfway point.

Ferrucci restarted the race in the 19th position in the No. 14 Homes For Our Troops Chevrolet after having pitted shortly before Saturday's red flag. From the outset it appeared that Ferrucci's car was not working as well as it had been earlier in the day. The team made adjustments but the changes were not as effective as they were in the previous race. He finished 20th.

"Race 2 obviously we were really happy with the car," Ferrucci said. "We thought we were in a good spot. Going back into Race 1 this evening, we made a couple of small adjustments, and we just tipped over the balance. We're not entirely sure, how we did that. So, we're going to go look at the data and kind of figure it out. It's just a really tough day. The guys did a great job getting the car in and out of pit lane all day. It was long day for everybody. Everybody's been up since basically 4, 4:30 in the morning and grinding away until seven something at night. Really, really thankful for the crew and everybody to be as good as they were all day long.  Not the result we wanted in race 1, we know we're better than that. Just got to figure out what happened."

Collet, who restarted 20th, saw his race end early following contact late in the event. Although he restarted two laps down, it appeared the car was handling better as Collet maintained his track position in the middle stages of the race.

However on lap 212, he was sandwiched between rookie Dennis Hauger on the outside and veteran Josef Newgarden on the inside as the trio were going through turn 4. On the exit, Newgarden punted Collet who shot into the outside wall hard. The car skidded along the wall coming to a stop on the frontstretch, heavily damaged. Fortunately, the young Brazilian climbed from the car with just a bruised knee. He placed 24th.

“Just a really tough weekend in general," said Collet. "Since practice, I've been struggling quite a lot just with feeling — and driving, especially. It's hard to understand why because we've been quite quick at the other ovals, and here was just kind of a really big struggle the whole weekend. Qualifying, we were kind of competitive, but yeah, the race runs that was not really something that we could have done. So hopefully we can have a stronger weekend at Laguna and finish off the season okay."

O'Ward went on to win again, completing a sweep of the Milwaukee weekend and becoming the first INDYCAR driver since Rick Mears in 1981 to win two races on the same day. Following O'Ward across the line were David Malukas, Rinus Veekay, Scott McLaughlin and Christian Rasmussen.

Alex Palou's 10th place finish secured his fifth NTT INDYCAR Series title in six years. He tied Sebastien Bourdais's record of winning four titles in a row.

The teams head west to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca to close out the 2026 season next weekend. The Mission Grand Prix of Monterey will be broadcast by FOX on Sunday, Sept. 6th starting at 2:30 p.m. ET.

In the INDY NXT race Sunday morning, Alessandro de Tullio turned lemons into lemonade. In qualifying, his first lap was quick enough to win the pole but on lap two he lost control and hit the wall forcing him into a backup car for the race. He started 21st and finished sixth, earning the Biggest Mover award.

"Happy with the result after a tough qualifying yesterday where we had that big incident," de Tullio said afterwards. "We had to start at the back today in a spare car with a new engine and new gearbox, so first of all, a big thanks to the whole team for working so hard and getting the car ready in such a short period of time for today’s race, especially since the car ran without a single issue. We had great pace and were able to charge forward. We just fell a bit short on laps. I think if we had a few more laps, we would have been in contention for a podium or possibly even the race win, so that’s a very positive sign. I’m really happy to recover from what was a tough, tough start to the weekend yesterday during qualifying. Thanks to all my sponsors, the whole No. 14 crew, and everyone who supports me."

Teammate Nicholas Monteiro started 23rd in the No. 4 Foyt Racing entry and finished 17th.

"It was a hard weekend for us — we had some engine problems in practice and had to change the engine for qualifying, but we didn't have enough time, so we didn't make it to qualifying," Monteiro explained. "Unfortunately, that meant we had to start last in the race. But we finished the race, gained some positions, and got some points for the championship, which is a positive. We’re learning this year — my rookie year — trying to learn as much as possible. Mistakes happen, it's okay, it’s just part of the job, but we keep up the hard work. We’ll be ready for the next race — the final race weekend of the season. And I'm really excited to run in Laguna, it will be my first time."

The INDY NXT Series closes out its season with the Grands Prix of Monterey,  a doubleheader at WeathertTech Raceway Laguna Seca next weekend. Race 1 will be broadcast Saturday on FS2 at 6:30p.m. ET. Race 2 will be Sunday on FS1 at 12:30 p.m. ET.
