Sergeant Josh Holm, like his uncles and grandfather, enlisted in the military and joined the Army as an armor crewman in 2006. On January 17, 2008, Sergeant Holm was serving with Ironhawk Troop, 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Mosul, Iraq, on a route clearance escort mission when his vehicle drove over an improvised explosive device (IED). He sustained severe injuries to his left leg, damage to his right knee, a broken back, tinnitus, and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Now 38, Josh, his wife Michelle and their daughters Maxine (7) and Mabel Jean (2.5) are scheduled to receive a home in Stow, Ohio from Homes For Our Troops this year. We asked him a few questions...
How did you become injured?
JH: "Route Clearance Escort Mission, and we had an IED detonate underneath my Abrams tank."
What were the extent of your injuries?
JH: "Leg was crushed, eventually amputated, soft tissue damage to knee/joint, T12-L1 fractures, and wedging (where a bone or anatomical space becomes narrower on one side than the other--usually the spine). I went through 14 surgeries and I was at Brooke Army Medical Center until my retirement for a total of three years."

What was the most difficult part of your journey?
JH: "Honestly, not being able to work my problems away, and having to just sit and dwell on my new reality."
Do you have any advice for other Veterans who may be struggling to adapt after suffering serious injury while serving?
JH: "Stay moving. Seek help when you need it, because you will, and temper yourself mentally, physically with learning, labor, and creative outlets."
Who are the heroes in your life?
JH: "Anyone that does the right thing, however small or large it may be, from picking up a piece of garbage on a trail, to standing up for injustice if you see it. "

Josh with his wife Michelle and their daughters Maxine and Mabel Jean.
Please describe the impact on your life and that of your family of getting a specially adapted home from Homes For Our Troops.
JH: "When we receive a home: we expect to open a new chapter in life, one in which I can safely push myself harder than before, one in which I can easily take a shower, one with enough space that I can use my wheelchair on days that I can’t ambulate properly, and finally one that we feel that I can gracefully age in, as I’ll need more help, to remove the lack of security, woes, and what-ifs of the future."
Have you been to a race before?
JH: "Yes, but no? I used to watch my uncle race motocross."
What are you most looking forward to seeing/doing at the race this weekend?
JH: "I love engineering, and the “technicality” of things. I hope to see both, on the car, on the track, and in the pits."

What are your hobbies?
JH: "Reading, Cooking, Baking, Wood Carving, Biking, Rowing
What are the top three things on your Bucket List?
JH: "Make my own dining table, carve unique shelves in my study/library, and create a home that my kids will always feel loved in and want to come back to."

CAIO COLLET returns to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course looking to break into the top-10 at a track where he has enjoyed success in the junior formulas. He has looked strong in his outings since the Indianapolis 500 and appeared to be headed for several top-10 finishes until unfortunate circumstances sidelined him.
Mid-Ohio was where you claimed your first win in IndyNxt and where you did your eval test for Foyt. What do you like about that track?
CC: "Mid-Ohio is definitely a special place for me. It’s where I got my first Indy NXT win, and it’s also where I had my evaluation test with AJ Foyt Racing, so I have a lot of great memories there. It’s a very technical track that really rewards precision. Every corner flows into the next, so you have to be smooth and consistent throughout the lap. It’s one of those circuits where if you get into a rhythm, it’s incredibly satisfying to drive, and that’s something I’ve always enjoyed."

What was the biggest difference and most challenging aspect of switching from IndyNxt to IndyCar?
CC: "The biggest difference has been the level of complexity. The IndyCar has much more power, more weight, and many more tools to manage inside the cockpit. Tire management and fuel saving also play a much bigger role over a race distance. From a driving perspective, adapting to the heavier car while still pushing at the limit took some time, but I think every weekend I’ve become more comfortable and learned something new. "
What is the secret to success at Mid-Ohio?
CC: "I think consistency is the biggest key. Mid-Ohio is very unforgiving because there are so many technical corners, and it’s easy to lose time with even a small mistake. Qualifying is always important, but during the race you also have to manage the tires well since they can fall off quite a bit over a stint. If you can stay clean, keep your rhythm, and execute the strategy, you’ll usually put yourself in a good position."
How did you spend your week home in Brazil? What did you do there and how long has it been since you were home?
CC: "It was really nice to be back home, even if it was only for a short time. I hadn’t been back in a few months, so it was great to spend some quality time with my family and friends. I tried to disconnect a little from racing, relax, enjoy some good food, and recharge before heading back to the U.S. Also did some recovery work for my ribs here with my doctor. The season is so busy that those moments at home are really valuable, and I came back feeling refreshed and ready for the next stretch of races."

Does running the Homes For Our Troops Chevy over the Fourth of July weekend carry more significance for you because of the No. 14's American flag livery?
SF: "Of course. It's obviously even more special on the Fourth of July weekend celebrating America's 250th birthday on Saturday, so it's just really exciting. Honestly, carrying that livery all year has been an honor and a privilege for me and our team."
What are the challenges you face when racing at Mid Ohio?
SF: "It's a tough track to pass on. Tire wear is not really a thing. It used to be a little bit more technical before the repave, but now it's just really fast. Tires don't really wear there which doesn't create great racing because there's no tire deg (degradation), so there's not much passing."
Any predictions for this weekend?

SF: "I think we should be in the top 10. We've made some adjustments, so hopefully we're better than we have been in the past, but we have not been collectively fantastic at this track."
You are camping there this year--what do you enjoy about staying at the track?
SF: "Just the convenience of being at the track, getting to sleep in and having the dogs with me, and you get a sense of home with being in the same bus all year."
What is your fondest Fourth of July memory?
SF: "We used to go out to the beach in Rhode Island quite a bit, watch the fireworks on the 4th of July. We never raced on the 4th of July -- always had it off."

INDY NXT BY FIRESTONE SERIES

NICHOLAS MONTEIRO
Nicholas Monteiro returns to Mid-Ohio this weekend with previous experience on the technical road course from his USF Pro 2000 days. The Brazilian rookie will look to capitalize on that familiarity in the No. 4 AJ Foyt Racing INDY NXT entry as he continues to build momentum in his debut campaign.

What takeaways from the Mid-Ohio test will you apply this weekend?
NM: "The test was really valuable for us. We learned a lot about the car balance over a long run and tried a few setup changes that gave us a better understanding of what the car needs around Mid-Ohio. We’ll use that information as a strong starting point this weekend and hopefully be more competitive right from the first practice."
What’s one word to describe the dynamic between you and your engineer?
NM: "Collaborative. We work closely together, communicate openly, and we’re always focused on finding ways to improve every session."
Where do you feel you’ve grown most this season?
NM: "I think I’ve grown the most in my consistency and race management. I’ve become more comfortable understanding what the car needs throughout a race weekend, and I’m making better decisions both on and off the track."
How have you refocused and stayed motivated after the challenges from the last round?
NM: "Motorsport always comes with highs and lows, so the key is to learn from every weekend and move forward. We analyzed what happened, took the positives from it, and stayed focused on the work ahead. My motivation hasn’t changed—I’m determined to keep improving and maximize every opportunity we have."

ALESSANDRO DE TULLIO

The driver of the No. 14 AJ Foyt Racing entry heads to Ohio with confidence after showcasing race-winning speed in the previous round and will look to convert that pace and skill into a strong result.
What takeaways from the Mid-Ohio test will you apply this weekend?
ADT: "I’ve raced at Mid-Ohio in USF Pro 2000, so I already knew the layout and characteristics of the track. The INDY NXT test was really helpful because we learned a lot about setup changes and found a few things that should help us heading into the race weekend."

What’s one word to describe the dynamic between you and your engineer?
ADT: "Trusting. We have a lot of confidence in each other, and our communication has continued to get stronger throughout the season."
Where do you feel you’ve grown most this season?
ADT: "Mentally. I’ve done a better job of keeping my head held high and not giving up, even when things haven’t gone our way."
How have you refocused and stayed motivated after the challenges from the last round?
ADT: "It’s all about turning the page. We showed strong pace, so the focus now is on taking the positives and continuing to deliver in the races ahead."
