More about Sting Ray...
Sting Ray was named after the Chevrolet Corvette -- his parents are Corvette enthusiasts. There is also some family history - Sting Ray derives from a shortened version of the name of the place his ancestors lived – Sterlingshire, Scotland – and his grandfathers’ first names...Faith is a key part of his life...He played basketball and ran cross country in high school and now enjoys snow skiing, hunting, water sports and rock climbing.
Favorite hobbies: Rock Climbing, Hunting, Pickleball, Snow Skiing, and anything outdoors.
Favorite music: Genre: Country or Christian.
Favorite artist: Riley Green, Forrest Frank.
Favorite book: Any by C.S. Lewis.
Heroes (Inspirations): Ayrton Senna, Travis Pastrana, and as a young boy, watching Tim Tebow. My home school teacher and her husband Mr. & Mrs. Blair, and last but not least my family and grandparents.
Favorite color: Radiant Red or Navy Blue.
Favorite vacation spot: In the mountains somewhere.
Favorite food: Meat and veggies, potatoes as well, please.
Favorite drink: Arnold Palmer (unsweet tea), lol.
Favorite dessert: A Fruit cobbler or a mint chocolate chip ice cream.
Favorite movies: Ford vs. Ferrari, Kung fu Panda, Ice Age (All), and Lincoln.
Favorite actor/actress: Robert Downey, Jr.
Favorite sport (other than racing) to watch on TV: College basketball, College football (go BSU Broncos), and PGA.
Favorite race tracks (& Why): Laguna Seca (because how could you not… It was also the last track I won a race at, and where I had my best INDYCAR finish as a rookie). Watkins Glen, because of the elevation changes.
Favorite restaurant: Local restaurants are always the best.
Favorite holiday: Christmas. Love getting to see all sides of the family.
Favorite present received (ever): A go-kart for my fifth birthday. After that, a pair of heelys.
Favorite season (besides ‘racing season’): Fall, best of all seasons.
Your answering machine message: Hello? Hello? I can’t hear you… Because this is my voicemail. Leave me a message and I’ll get back to you as soon as I’m off the track. Thanks. Bye.
Oldest thing in your refrigerator: Grandma’s homemade jam, freshly canned… in 2022.
Pets: None currently.
Something you do before every race: Pray with family.
Most interesting fact about your career: I won my first RTI race in my 49th start; then went on to win 7 races that same year en route to my IndyPro2000 Championship. Square root of 49 is 7.
Something most people don't know about you: I’m an only child with 8 siblings (4 half and 4 step)
Who would you like to have dinner with (a person dead or alive): Jesus, C.S. Lewis, and Ayrton Senna, and Dick Guldstrand.
Quality you value most in others: Humility
What you'd be if you weren't a race driver: Sad… Just kidding, I probably would’ve studied theology and engineering. I also think I could just take a couple buddies, move to the mountains and train bird dogs.
How you got started in racing: My parents were big Corvette fans. Thus, the name. That meant that I got to spend a lot of my early years around cool, old, fast cars. We were around many, whether it be at the drag races, autocross events, car shows, or Corvette Club meetings. I always had a desire to go faster.
How you relax at the race track: Drink a hot tea and listen to the Bible Project podcast or music.
How you spend your spare time: On a typical week day you can find me rock climbing, running, reading or any other fun activity such as that with friends and family.
Greatest fear: Sharks (ironic, I know)
Secret wish: To be a good singer or musician (of which I’m neither).
Awards: I’ve won hundreds of awards over the years, but my favorites are the Road to Indy Spirit Awards I received for both my performance on and off the track - meaning I was representing the series, my partners and family well.
Most proud accomplishment: I can do the worm! (There’s a video floating around somewhere with that LOL).
Best advice your mother ever gave you: Nothing good ever happens after midnight.
Greatest influence on/in your life: The media I consume, as well as the people I spend the most time around. You will become what you consume.
What you like most about yourself: I am competitive and curious.
Most thrilling experience in a race car: Indianapolis Motor Speedway 2023 INDY 500 qualifying.
Most thrilling experience outside of a racecar: Snow skiing with a foot of fresh powder.
Toughest part of your job: The pressure. The unknowns.
Your highest goal in racing: Winning the INDY 500 is the most impactful achievement in racing. For myself, however, I would say being a multi-time champion would be more meaningful because it shows that you were the best driver on any given day.
What would a successful life look like to you? A happy family that finds purpose through their faith. A successful career that I was able to steward into more than just trophies on a wall, i.e. providing opportunity and hope for those that otherwise wouldn’t have any. Creating opportunities for others to grow, be challenged and feel loved.
